Abstract
A process for refining metal in the molten state comprises blowing a halogen or halogen compound other than carbon tetrachloride onto the surface of a melt covered by a slag so as to remove hydrogen from both melt and slag. The halogen or halogen compound may be used in either solid or vapourized form, and may be transported to the melt by means of a carrier gas. In the example, sodium fluoride is delivered using argon as carrier gas from a nozzle positioned 300 mm above the surface of the melt.
