Abstract
1,037,822. Non-linear resistors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 12, 1962 [Dec. 15, 1961], No. 45032/61. Heading H1K. A resistance element consists of an electrically insulating lamina containing a single layer of particles of non-linear resistance material each of which projects from both faces of the lamina to engage electrodes at said faces. The granules may be spread in a single layer on a polythene lamina and then pressed into it or a polythene lamina and a layer of granules may be sandwiched between sheets of rubber and the sandwich heated under pressure so that the polythene deforms to leave the granules projecting from its surfaces. In a further method described a layer of granules is held under pressure between two rubber surfaces, a resinous material introduced around the granules by vacuum impregnation, and the rubber surfaces removed after solidifying the resin. The resinous material may, however, be mixed with the granules, then solidified whereupon opposed surfaces of the lamina so formed are teased or ground to expose the granules at these surfaces. A composite lamina with projecting granules may be produced by applying pressure to abutting laminµ with a layer of granules in an adhesive layer between the faces. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a layer of granules of silicon carbide 1 embedded in a lamina 2 is contacted by opposing rigid conductive plates 3a and 3b separated by an insulating washer. A second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) utilizes two conical washers which insulate two rigid conductive discs in contact with the granules from a centrally disposed bolt passing through the discs and forming with them a composite unit. A third embodiment utilizes an insulating lamina in strip form (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) with granules embedded in a central longitudinal portion of the strip and conductive connection to the granules provided by a conductive coating. Any form of the non-linear resistance elements disclosed may be encapsulated in a suitable resin.
