Abstract
Single or multi-ply polymeric sheet material, examples of which are given in the form of a perforated endless belt is coated with silica to improve the frictional properties of the surface of the belt. The belt material may be coated with colloidal silica and dried or with ground silica and the belt then heated to its softening point to cause the silica to adhere thereto or alternatively thermosetting resins may be used to cause the silica powder to adhere.ALSO:A perforated endless belt having at least a layer of polymeric sheet material is arranged to run between the wire of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine and moisture removing means such as suction boxes to reduce the frictional drag. A belt 50, Fig. 1 (not shown), of polyethyleneterephthalate passes between the upper run 38 of the wire 20 and the tops 46 of suction boxes 45 being trained also about the couch roll 22. The tops of the suction boxes may be formed of polished stainless steel. In a modification (Fig. 4 not shown) the belt is trained about both the breast and couch rolls so that for the major part of the run it travels contiguously with the wire. In both of these embodiments drive is transmitted through the perforated belt from the couch roll to the wire but in a further modification (Fig. 5 not shown) the belt transmits no drive and travels with the wire over a portion only of its upper run. The perforations normally comprise from 10% to 50% of the area of the belt, may be of other shape than round and preferably lie in lines leaving uninterrupted paths of belt material both longitudinally and transversely. The surface of the belt may be grooved or the belt enclosed to improve lateral drainage characteristics (Figs 10-13 not shown). To improve adhesion between the perforated belt and the wire the belt may be coated on its outer surface with silica. To obtain adequate strength a multi-ply construction may be used for the belt, while the belt may also be formed of a sheet of polymeric material laminated together with a woven fabric, a non-woven fabric or a foam layer, (see Division B5). Polymeric materials other than polyethylene terephthalate may be used for the belt including polyamides, polycarbonates, polyolefines, vinyl polymers and vinylidene polymers.
