Abstract
1,026,474. Cooling reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. May 13, 1964 [May 23, 1963], No. 20543/63. Heading G6C. In a liquid cooled marine reactor, having a water shield, heat generated, during reactor shut-down, by the decay of fission products is dissipated into the shield. Heat exchangers in the shield carry a flow of primary coolant from the reactor core which is circulated by thermal convection subject to control by a valve. The valve is closed during normal reactor operation. The water shield is cooled by an external water jacket connected to a heat sink, which may be the sea.
