Abstract
A black anodic oxide coating is produced on a 6063 Al-Mg-Si alloy suitable for architectural purposes by immersing the alloy in a bath containing 25-150 g./l. of sulphophthalic acid and 0.1-15 g./l. of sulphuric acid, anodizing the alloy in a first stage at a constant current density in the range 15-50 A.S.F. until a preselected voltage in the range 25-100 volts is reached, and subsequently anodizing the alloy while maintaining the preselected voltage until a black coating is obtained. Typically the bath temperature should be within the range 7.2-29.4 DEG C. and a coating of thickness 0.3-2.0 mils may be obtained. Prior to anodizing the alloy may be etched in NaOH solution and desmutted in nitric acid while the anodizing coating may be sealed in a near-boiling aqueous bath containing sodium lignosulphate and nickel acetate.
