Abstract

1,019,629. Nuclear reactors. STRACHEN & HENSHAW Ltd. Aug. 19, 1963 [Aug. 7, 1962], No. 30227/62. Addition to 1,013,683. Heading G6C. Sealing means for the standpipe of a nuclear reactor comprising a piston sealed within a cylinder by two sealing rings, is characterized in that the sealing ring remote from the pressure is expanded mechanically to form a piston seal with the cylinder. In Fig. 2, the closure member 18 is sealed in the casing 2 by sealing rings 26 and 28a. A locking device comprises a cage ring 32 carrying hardened pins 34, and an extension 35 of the cage 32 is adapted to engage the sealing ring 28a, when under pressure, to expand it to form a piston seal.
