Abstract
1,018,866. Piston packings; joint-making packings. MASCHINENFABRIK BURCKHARDT A.G. April 18, 1963 [April 24, 1962], No. 15405/63. Headings F2B and F2T. A device for sealing high-pressure fluid in a cylinder 1 comprises a packing ring 4 which is urged into sealing engagement with the cylinder wall by the pressure of the fluid to be sealed and which engages an elastically radially expandable, unsplit backing ring 5 fitted between the ring 4 and a part 3 closing the cylinder, the radial expansion of the ring 5 by the fluid pressure being sufficient to maintain contact with the cylinder wall upon expansion of the cylinder bore and the ring 5 serving to back up the packing ring 4 over the whole of the surface of the ring 4 confronting the part 3. The part 3 may be a moving piston or a stationary closure member such as a screwed cover or cylinder head. The ring 4 is of rubber and is prevented from extruding between the part 3 and the cylinder wall by the ring 5. Sealing between the ring 5 and the piston is obtained by grinding the ring 5 so that it engages the piston in a fluidtight manner or by the provision of a soft packing ring 6. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the ring 4 is mounted between a pair of backing rings 5 bearing against covers 3 closing a flat discshaped pressure chamber.
