Abstract

1,017,254. Cutting by fusion. H. R. MORGAN. April 29, 1964 [Feb. 4, 1963], No. 4473/63. Heading B3V. Apparatus for generating the profile of the end of a tube 32 to enable it to be joined to a main tube, comprises a crank-shaft 1 rotatable and slidable axially in bearings 7, 8 and whose crank-arm 2 is interconnected by a universal joint 3, 4 with an arm 5 of an armshaft 6 also rotatable and slidable axially in bearings 9, 10, the two shafts 1, 6 being disposed at an angle corresponding to that of the tube joint, whereby upon their rotation the crankshaft 1 is caused to move axially which movement is transmitted into a relative movement between the cutting tool and tube or between the cutting tool and a cam, which cam is thus profiled in accordance with this movement. The tool is preferably a flame-cutting torch which may be swivelled during cutting to produce a bevelled edge. The crank-shaft 1 is rotated through worm-gearing 24, 25, sleeve 21 and crank-pin 19; sleeve 21 also drives through sprockets 26, 28 and chain 27, a chuck 29 carrying the tube 32. Torch 35 is mounted on a longitudinally slidable spring- loaded bar 12 connected by link 13 with the crank-shaft. The ball and socket joint 3, 4 is held in engagement by a spring 11A. The crank pin radius is adjustable to suit the radius of the tube 32 and the effective length of arm 5 is adjustable to suit the radius of the main tube; alternatively the crank arm 2 may have two sockets placed at different radii for use with an arm 5 having two ball ends spaced at different effective radii, Fig. 5 (not shown). The arm-shaft bearings 9, 10 are mounted on a bed 16 pivoted at 16A to the main bed plate 17. When the two tubes are to be offset axially, the beds 16, 17 are disposed in spaced parallel planes. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the torch 35 is used to cut a profile on a cam 45 which is used subsequently in another apparatus for controlling the longitudinal movment of a torch during profiling of a tube end. The two shafts 1, 6 are interconnected by a Hooke's joint 4A. Gearing and levers may be used to increase or reduce the movement of the cutting tool.
