Abstract

Shaped abrasive articles, e.g. wheels, are produced by moulding by means of pressure and/or heat to the required shape a mass of pellets, each of which comprises a central primary diamond, surrounded by a bonding medium, which suitably comprises dextrine or shellac, but is more preferably a metallic bond containing mixtures of tungsten carbide and cobalt powder (50/50), or steel powder mixtures comprising 95.25% Fe, 4% Ni and 0.75% C; copper and tin mixtures may also be used. The central diamond particle is preferably of at least 60 grit size and the pellets are generally spherical in form, the bonding medium being at least nine times the volume of the abrasive particle. As shown in Fig. 1, the pellets are made by passing powdered matrix material and temporary binder 12 on to diamond particle 10 contained in rotating inclined pan 11, together with solvent 13 for the temporary binder and, if desired, organic wetting agent. When the pellets have " snowballed " <PICT:1014295/C4-C5/1> <PICT:1014295/C4-C5/2> to the required size, they are preferably dried, and then placed in mould cavity 20 (Fig. 2) to be compacted under pressure of member 21. If desired, temporary binder 12 may be omitted and water used instead of solvent 13.
