Abstract
A high-bulk fibrous felt is made of 50 to 90% asbestos and 10 to 50% glass impregnated with 30 to 70% by weight of a B-stage thermosetting resin having a minimum polymerization temperature of 66 DEG C., the felt being used with a compatible thermosetting resin, and the resins being curable at a temperature between 135 DEG C. and 204 DEG C. To make the felt glass fibre is processed through a hammer mill, mixed with asbestos in a beater with water between 32 DEG C. and 49 DEG C. and, after adding 1-10% of a corn gum binder, is felted in an apparatus which is controlled to a speed of about 600 ft/min. Parallel fibres of glass or nylon may be included lengthwise in the felt for strengthening. Variations in felt manufacture include first mixing part of the asbestos with all the glass and adding the remainder of the asbestos with the binder; also the glass may be brushed or mixed before adding the asbestos or binder or the mixed batch may be brushed before felting. The felt is between 0.3 and 0.6 inches thick and is made up into 300 to 400 lb rolls which may be cut into strips for pipework. The felt is impregnated with either an anhydride-curable epoxy resin, or an unsaturated polyester resin or a phenol aldehyde resin or a mixture of these. The resin may or may not be cured at this stage. For application to a pipe or other article the felt is dipped in, or rolled with a compatible liquid resin and wound on to or applied to the article which has also been processed with the liquid resin. Heat is then applied to cure the resins.
