Abstract

1,011,226. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 15, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 23118/62. Heading H1D. A character display tube comprises a single electron-emissive cathode and a pattern of anode electrodes disposed on a common surface in the form of separated coatings of luminescent material, the pattern being such that any one of a set of letters or numbers may be displayed by connection of appropriate ones of the anodes to a source of anode potential. As shown, seven separate luminescent anode strips, which together form a figure eight, and may be used to display any one of the numbers 0 to 9, are applied over corresponding separate conductive coatings provided with individual terminals 5, on a support plate, which may be tranparent glass or mica, or which may be opaque and arranged obliquely to the cathode, Fig. 3 (not shown). A grid may be provided in front of, and connected to, the cathode so that the electron emission is space-charge limited. Also, a transparent, photo-emissive cathode may be arranged parallel to the anodes to obtain an optical feed-back effect, ambient illumination being sufficient to initiate the discharge.
