Abstract
A composition comprises 50 to 95% by weight, based on the total weight of polystyrene, of non-expansible polystyrene, 50 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of polystyrene, of expansible polystyrene and a nucleating agent. The non-expansible polystyrene can be crystal polystyrene or high impact polystyrene or a mixture of the two. Examples of high impact polymers include a terpolymer of 5% acrylonitrile, 5% butadiene and 90% polystyrene; a copolymer 5% butadiene and 95% styrene; a mixture of 95% of a polymer of styrene made in the presence of 5% polybutadiene; a copolymer of 5% chlorosulphonated polyethylene and 95% styrene; a blend of 97.5% polystyrene and 2.5% polybutadiene; a blend of 95% polystyrene and 5% of hydrogenated polybutadiene containing 35.4% residual unsaturation; polystyrene formed in the presence of 5% of hydrogenated polybutadiene containing 4.5% residual unsaturation; a blend of 95% styrene and 5% polyisoprene; a copolymer of 99.5% styrene and 0.5% divinyl benzene. The expansible polystyrene is in the form of particles preferably containing between 1 and 15% by weight of a non-reactive organic liquid such as hydrocarbons, alcohols or halogenated hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide liberating nucleating agents are mixtures of a basic substance and an acid having at least 3 milli equivalents of acidic hydrogen per gram. The composition can be extruded to form a foam sheet which can be used for making a cup by deep drawing it over a vacuum former. Specification 988,877 is referred to.
