Abstract

1,003,696. Feeding webs. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and H. A. STONE. June 20, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 22455/61. Heading B6B. A replacement web W1 is spliced to an expiring web W without stopping the machine being fed by apparatus including means to hold stationary the portion of the running web to be joined to the replacement web, an edge 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), against which the web W, Fig. 1, can be severed across its width, a guide 8 for the web W, and a suction device for holding the leading portion of the web W1 which is to be spliced to the web W, and means whereby the guide 8 and suction device can be moved relatively to each other to bring the webs into adhesive contact. During splicing, web is fed to the machine being fed from a reserve accumulated in the manner described in Specification 964,006. A piece of adhesive tape T is attached to the end of the web W1 and placed against perforated plate 17 connected to suction. The plate 17 is swung down by handle 15, thereby tripping a micro-switch 27 which stops feed rollers 1. The web W is braked by guide 3 having a dished surface 5, Fig. 3 (not Shown), connected to suction. After splicing, the handle 15, Fig. 1, is pushed inwardly to cut off the supply of vacuum to the plate 17 to release the web W1 and the operator pulls web W downwardly to sever the web W against the serrated edge 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), of plate 10, Fig. 1. The handle 15 is then swung upwardly, whereupon switch 27 restarts feed rollers 1.
