Abstract
Non-cellular polyurethanes are prepared by simultaneously reacting a polyisocyanate, a polyalkylene ether glycol having a M.W. of 500-2500 and a hydrocarbon alkylene diol in the presence of a catalyst, said components being reacted in the following proportions: (A) NCO groups/Active hydrogen groups = 0.95 to 1.20/1 (B) Mols. hydrocarbon alkylene diol/Mols. polyalkylene ether glycol = 1.0 to 3.5/1 A difunctional chain extender, e.g. arylene or aliphatic diamine may be incorporated in amount to provide up to 0.2 functional groups per hydroxyl group. Suitable polyethers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene and polyamylene glycols. The hydrocarbon diol may be: ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-butane diol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,5-pentane diol, 1,3-hexane diol, and 1,8-octane diol. Suitable polyisocyanates and catalysts are listed. In a typical Example (1) tolylene diisocyanate was added to a mixture of polypropylene glycol and 1,4-butane diol followed by N-ethylmorpholine.
