Abstract
1,000,555. Staircase lifts; catchgear. A. COUSINS. Aug. 10, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No 29708/60. Headings B8H and B8L. A lift mechanism adapted to be mounted on a staircase comprises a platform 3 pivoted about a hinge pin 6 on a bracket 7 which is adjustably mounted about an axis 8 on a carriage 4 provided with pairs of rollers 14 running within a channel-section rail 2. In the operative position of the platform, a roller 5 runs on a rail 1, whilst, in its inoperative position, the platform is pivoted to the vertical position at one side of the staircase, Fig. 2. The carriage is traversed up and down the rails by a winch driven by a reversible electric motor, the winch cable 11 passing round a pulley at the top of the stairway to a spring-urged pawl 15a pivoted on the axle of the lower pair of rollers 14, whereby, if the cable becomes slack, the pawl will be urged downwardly into engagement with pegs 16 on the lower flange of the rail 2. The cable also engages a tension-sensitive switch in the winch motor circuit which is broken if the cable becomes slack. The motor is controlled by a three-position switch 20 on the handle 21 and a low voltage system including a wiper blade engaging a conducting strip countersunk into and insulated from a thrust rail 2d which is mounted on top of the rail 2 and which is engaged by a pair of rollers or sliding blocks mounted on the carriage. Movement of the carriage is arrested at the upper and lower ends of the staircase by limit switches, and over-ride switches may be provided at the top and bottom of the staircase for closing the appropriate motor winding circuit to bring the lift to the upper or lower end of the staircase.
