An electrical connector specially adapted for high voltage connections comprises a plug member carrying a conductive pin 26, the free end of which is rigidly secured to an insulating pin 30 of arc extinguishing material, and a socket carrying a conductive sleeve 58 having an annular inward projection 62 which is adjacent to an insulating sleeve 66 of arc extinguishing material. The plug includes a resilient hood moulded from insulating material e.g. elastomer rubber and has a projection 36 at the end of recess 16 in which pin 26 is located. The socket body 40 may be formed from either an organic insulating material or an inorganic one such as glass or porcelain. When the plug and socket are mated projection 36 engages in a groove 38 on the socket body, and the connector is moisture-proofed by coating the tapering mating surfaces 16 and 48 with grease prior to assembly. On separation of the members the arc drawn between the conductive members is confined in the space between the insulated member 40 and the sleeve 66 and the heat of the arc causes these members to set up a deionized zone which will extinguish the arc. In a further embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) an electrically non-conductive spring loaded cap, is positioned within the socket conductive sleeve. The spring is compressed on insertion of the plug pin, and on disconnection the cap follows the motion of the pin to provide a high dielectric medium in the gap between the conductors, thus preventing arcing. The incoming cable 22 has its stranding removed, a spade terminal 24 is crimped to the end of the cable core, and the assembly is inserted into a moulded recess in the hood, which is then filled with a grease-type insulating material.
