Abstract
Alloys having the molar composition Gd2Bi, Gd2Sb, Dy2Sb, (Gd1- z Dyz)2 Sb Gd2(Sb1- x Bix), and (Gd1- z Dyz)2 (Sb1- x Bix), are prepared by mixing the finely divided elemented constituents in the required ratios, and heating the mixture in a sealed crucible in the absence of O2 to a temperature of at least 1300 DEG C. The rare earth metal may be comminuted in a dry O2 - free atmosphere, and the mixture pressed into pellets. The crucible may be heated in a quartz R. F. induction heater, in vacuo or in He. A futher heat treatment may be necessary to achieve a single phase product. In specific examples, the compositions Gd2 Bi0.6, Sb0.4 Gd Dy Sb, and Gd1.4 Dy0.6 Bi0.5 Sb0.5 were produced. produced.ALSO:Compounds of formula Gd2Bi, Gd2Sb, and Dy2Sb, and solid solutions thereof, are prepared by mixing the finely-divided elemental constituents in the required molar ratios, and heating the mixture in a sealed crucible in the absence of O2 to a temperature of at least 1300 DEG C. The rare earth metal may be comminuted in a dry O2-free atmosphere, and the mixture pressed into pellets. The crucible may be heated in a quartz R.F. induction heater, in vacuo or in He. The solid solutions are given the formulae (Gd1- zDyz)2Sb, Gd2(Sb1- xBix), and (Gd1- zDyz)2(Sb1- xBix). A further heat treatment may be necessary to achieve a single-phase product.
