Abstract

2,3-Dichloro-1: 3-butadiene is manufactured by dehydrochlorinating 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-butane with a dehydrochlorinating agent, which comprises an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal alkoxide having not more than two carbon atoms in the molecule or a mixture thereof, in the presence of an inert solvent for at least one of the reactants at a temperature below 20 DEG C. under conditions in which the molar ratio of dehydrochlorinating agent to 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobutane never ex ceeds two, and then separating the 2,3 di chloro -1 : 3-butadiene from the reaction mix ture by fractional distillation.
