Abstract

1,084,442. Combined burner-inlet valves. RONSON CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No.44257/64. Heading F4F. A brass or plastics combined burner-inlet valve for butane cigarette lighters and gas candles comprises a housing 36 screwed into an outer housing 37 secured to the wall 3 of the lighter reservoir and having a well 19 which receives the neck of a refill vessel (not shown), a tube 7 mounted in the housing 36 for penetrating the refill neck and having a passage 11 leading from the reservoir through pressure reducing and liquefied fuel evaporating means to the atmosphere at 12, a residual gas exhaust valve 16 opened by the engagement of the neck with a valve projection 22, and an inlet valve 24 operable by the pressure of the liquefied gas in the refill vessel. In one embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (only Fig. 4 shown), the pressure reducing and evaporating means are adjustable, and comprise a cotton wick 44 extending through openings 43a, 43b in a portion 40 of the outer housing 37, and a metal or plastics ball 42 which adjustably compresses the wick so that the flow of gas may be regulated by rotating the valve housing 36 in the outer housing 37 by means of a tool or cap engaging slots (15a) at the top of the housing 36. The top end of the tube 7 is sealed by a resilient membrane 34 mounted inside a snuffer cap 32. The valves 16, 24 comprise mushroomshaped members peripherally grooved for sealing rings 20, 27 of rubber or synthetic rubber, and biased against the housing 1 by steel or plastics split rings 21, 28 in circumferential grooves 21a, 28a. An opening 45 is formed in the outer housing 37 near the exhaust valve 16. The refill vessel, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a self-sealing rubber-like membrane (31) pierceable by the tube 7, but may comprise a spring-urged neck depressable by the tube 7 to release gas from the refill. In another embodiment, Figs. 1, 2 and 3 (not shown), the pressure reducing and evaporating means are not adjustable, and comprise a tube (5) filled with sintered metal, plastics or ceramic (6), secured to the lower end of the housing. The housing is screwed or welded directly to the reservoir wall 3, the outer housing being absent.
