Abstract

Acrolein, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde are prepared by oxidizing propylene with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising a heavy metal oxide, defined to be an oxide of molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten or bismuth, and an activator consisting of a mixture of oxides of arsenic and boron. The preferred catalyst containing molybdenum oxide is obtained by the calcination in air at 300-500 DEG C. of molybdic acid or ammonium molybdate in the presence of boric and arsenic acids deposited by dispersion, precipitation or impregnation on a carrier such as silica, carborundum or pumice. The preferred molar ratio of boron to molybdenum and of boron to arsenic is from 0.2 to 5. The oxidation process is carried out in a static or fluidized bed reactor at a temperature of from 250-450 DEG C. and at a pressure of from 1-10 atmospheres (absolute). The reaction feed mixture comprises propylene, water vapour and excess air and may contain propane. The reaction gases may be rec-cycled after removing the products by condensation followed by water washing. The products are identified by chromatographic analysis and molar partial conversions and yields are given for different catalyst compositions and reaction conditions. The process is also operated using a boron-free catalyst composition for comparison. Acetic acid, acetone and propionaldehyde are obtained as by -products.
