Abstract

A composition dispersible in water at room temperature comprises a finely divided solidified reaction product of 70-85 parts by weight of a dialdehyde polysaccharide, in which 0.5-100 of each 100 units of anhydroglucose units have been oxidized to dialdehyde units represented by <FORM:1081957/C3/1> with (1) 15-30 parts by weight of a dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation product; or (2) 15-30 parts by weight of a hypochlorite oxidized polysaccharide or (3) a mixture of 7.5-15 parts by weight of the condensation product and 7.5-15 parts by weight of the hypochlorite-oxidized polysaccharide. The compositions may be made by forming an aqueous slurry of the dialdehyde starch and the other reactant or reactants, heating the slurry to 70-100 DEG C. with stirring, cooling the slurry to 70 DEG C., adjusting the pH to 4-5.5 and spray-drying. The reaction-products improve tensile wet-strenght in paper manufacture. Specified polysaccharides are starches, amylose, amylopectin, celluloses and gums.ALSO:The tensile wet strength of paper is improved by adding to the paper pulp, or treating paper with, an aqueous dispersion of a reaction product of 70-85 parts by weight of a dialdehyde polysaccharide with (1) 15-30 parts by weight of a dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation product or (2) 15-30 parts by weight of a hypochlorite oxidised polysaccharide; or (3) a mixture of 7.5-15 parts by weight of the condensation product and 7.5-15 parts by weight of the hypochlorite oxidised polysaccharide. In Examples, such reaction products, based on p starch, are added to bleached cellulosic Kraft pulp of 450 cc CSF and a consistency of 1.0 weight % based on oven-dry pulp, and handsheets are made therefrom. In one Example, zirconium oxychloride is also added to the pulp as a cationising agent, although the products of use of a separate cationising agent with the polysaccharide reaction products of the invention is not essential.
