Abstract
1,080,726. Optical apparatus. ROLLS ROYCE Ltd. Oct. 13, 1965, No.43486/65. Heading G2J. [Also in Division G1] The clearance between the tips of rotor blades and the rotor casing is measured by directing light towards the annular region between the tips and the casing so as to be reflected from the ends of the blades or partially obstructed by the passing tips and thereby be modulated by variations in length between the succeeding blades. The light is guided into the casing by a glass rod terminating in a prism within the casing or by a bundle of optical fibres, similar arrangements being used to conduct the light to detector or detectors. Individual fibres may be connected to individual detectors and the number receiving light is an indication of the size of the clearance.
