Abstract

1,078,913. Power hammers. KOBE STEEL WORKS Ltd. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 24, 1963], No. 31056/64. Heading B3H. A gas pressure operated power hammer has its ram 2 connected to a piston-rod 5 passing through a closed gas pressure chamber 8 and having an enlarged end portion 10 upon which the gas pressure acts to hold the ram in its raised position. The end portion 10 is a plunger fitting within a cylinder 11 to which the gas pressure is admitted through conduit 151 and valve 16 for initiating the working stroke. After moving through a stroke distance L the gas pressure in chamber 8 acts directly on the portion 10 to produce a high speed movement of the ram. The latter is raised by jacks 17, 18 controlled by valve 19 and when the plunger 10 enters cylinder 11 the gas therein is discharged through conduit 15 and check valve 14. Ram 2 and bed 4 carry co-operating dies 1, 3 for shaping the workpiece 22. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the end of the piston-rod 5 comprises a cylinder fitting over a fixed plunger; the stroke is initiated by the jacks 18 which move the ram downwardly through its initial stroke, and the pressure in the gas chamber may be varied by introducing liquid into the chamber.
