Abstract

In apparatus for drying leather, the leather is laid and smoothed on a cold sheet metal plate 9 in a frame 6 having rollers 8 whilst on a worktable (1) Fig. 1 (not shown) and then conveyed into a vacuum drying chamber 3 by endless conveyer chains (not shown) wherein an upper hood 11, connected to a source of vacuum, is lowered by compressed air cylinders 12 to press the plate 9 on to a hot table 14. Simultaneously, a second drying plate 9 in a frame (7), Fig. 1 (not shown) <PICT:1077093/C6-C7/1> is loaded with leather on the work-table which is a grating formed by bars which may be cooled from below by a fan (not shown). The hood 11 has a felt pad 15 to contact the leather and drying plate, and a track for the rollers 8 in the chamber 3 is spring-loaded at 13 to allow the plate 9 to contact the hot table 14.
