Abstract
A cathode comprises a layer of electron emissive material, e.g alkaline earth oxides, on a metal base which comprises a mixture of sintered particles of nickel and chromium. The chromium acts as an activating agent, and other metals for this purpose may also be present, e.g. the base may comprise, by weight, up to 20% chromium, 3% hafnium, 0.5% magnesium, 3% tantalum, 6% tungsten or 3% titanium. Additionally, the metal base may comprise up to 0.1% aluminium, 1% cobalt, 0.5% silicon, 0.5% manganese, 1% vanadium, 1% germanium and 1% zirconium, for increased mechanical strength and/or emissivity. Specific examples are given.
