Abstract
1,075,030. Turbine blades. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec.9, 1965 [Dec. 22, 1964], No. 52269/65. Heading F1T. Each turbine nozzle guide blade 34 in a gas turbine engine consists of stacked thin aerofoil section laminations 50 secured together by bolts 56, 58 passing through the laminations and through segmental shroud platforms 52, 54. The platforms are secured to adjacent casing structure by bolts 74, 76 respectively. Cooling air is supplied through a pipe 104 from the engine compressor to an annular chamber 100 at the radially outer end of the guide blades 34 to supply passages within the blades. These passages comprise, Fig. 3 (not shown), a main channel (114) extending radially through the laminations 50 and communicating through ports (116) with a groove (110) formed in one face of each lamination. Cooling air from the groove (110) leaves the trailing edge of the lamination through a further groove (112). The bolt 56 extends through the centre of the channel (114) and has radially spaced cooling air passages (118). The width (t) of the groove (110) is varied along its length to satisfy the local cooling requirements. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), each lamination (50A) has two main channels (214, 220) and the cooling air from a. groove (210) is discharged through openings (211, 213) in the convex and concave sides of the lamination. Figs. 7, 9 (not shown) illustrate further modifications, the main channel (414) through the laminations (50C) in Fig. 9 containing a baffle member (422).
