Abstract

A vertical frusto-conical upwardly-diverging centrifuge drum (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), has a solid stub shaft (3c) at its lower end mounted in bearings (6) and incorporates an upwardly-converging hollow conical member (3) mounted on the drum base plate (2) and ending in a short cylindrical portion (3b) mounted in bearings (7) carried by the removable cover (8) of casing (9). For heating, the conical member (3) may be surrounded by a stationary induction coil (19), or it may be formed of resistance alloy and constitute part of the secondary circuit of a transformer, the primary coil (20) of which is secured to the underside of plate (2) and energised through slip-ring (21). Feeding of material for centrifuging is by an upper feed nozzle (5), conical member (3) and peripheral slots (3a) in the lower end of the conical member. The slots (3a) may be regulated by counter-weighted, or spring-loaded, or resilient flaps.
