Abstract
Vermiculite flakes, for coating a core to be used when casting metal (see Division B3), are prepared by expanding raw vermiculite by heating it at temperatures not greater than 650 DEG C. and milling it in water, air or other fluids inert to the ore to produce flakes of a size not greater than 80 mesh (U.S. Standard). Ball mills or high speed ribbon blenders or paddle mixers may be used or a gas suspension of the ore may be fed between grinding stones. For applying the flakes by brushing, spraying or dipping, a slurry is prepared by mixing them with water and a volatile liquid such as isopropanol, ethanol, methanol, acetone, toluene or mineral spirits. Up to 2% by weight of carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl, propyl or butyl cellulose, alkali metal alginates or bentonite clay may be included as a stabilizing and thickening agent and up to 8% of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, phenolformaldehyde resins or silicate or cereal binders may be added to increase adhesion.
