A drinking appliance, of the kind in which water is supplied to a bowl 5 or the like through a valve 17 operated by meansof a flap 8 movable by the animal, has the flap pivoted in an upwardly projecting cowl 4, the lower part 8a of the flap being inclined downwardly and inwardly of the appliance. The valve is actuated by a roller 11 carried by the flap.
