Abstract

1,069,741. Electrophotographic frost images. RANK XEROX Ltd. May 12, 1964 [May 17, 1963], No. 19656/64. Heading G2H. A frost image is formed on a member (Fig. 1) comprising, in order a support 16, an insulating photo-conductive layer 13 having a thickness of ¢ to 25 microns, a transparent thermoplastic layer 11, a transparent deformable conductive layer 12, a conductive layer 17 and support 15, by forming an electrostatic charge on the surface of support 16 by means of a corona discharge device, exposing the member imagewise to light, recharging the surface to a uniform potential, and heating the member until the interface between the layers 11 and 12 deforms to a frost image. In a modification a deformable photo-conductor layer 13 is used and deformable layer 12 is omitted, the frost image being formed at the interface of layers 11 and 13. Suitable thermoplastic layers 11 are Staybelite ester and Pliolite (Registered Trade Mark). Suitable deformable layers 12 are liquids (e.g. water, alcohol, glycerine, sucrose acetate isobutyrate and a non- ionic detergent) and heat softenable solids (e. g. polyethylene glycols, silicone oils, petroleum oils, and aqueous polyethylene imine, if necessary containing a conductivity agent such as stannic chloride). Suitable deformable photo-conductive layers consist of transparent organic photoconductors in a softenable resin (e. g. PVC or Staybelite).
