Abstract

1,069,263. Roof structures. W. H. WILLATTS. March 18, 1964 [March 22, 1963], No. 11552/63. Heading E1W. A roof structure comprises a ceiling unit 1 (Figs. 1 and 4) of laterally-spaced-apart joists 3 connected by transverse spacers 4 and a rafter unit 2 comprising laterally spaced-apart rafter members 12 connected transversely e.g. by cladding 17 (Fig. 6) to which is secured bituminuous felt 18 or other water proofing material, the ceiling and rafter units 1, 2 being such that they can be collapsed to be nested together (Fig. 6) for later assembly on a site with the rafter unit 2 inclined to the ceiling unit 1, one unit, e.g. 1 carrying struts 5 which can then be swung up to be secured to the unit 2 to support it. Plasterboard 16 or other board material may be secured to the joists 3. The water proofing material may overhang the unit 2 so that there may be a water-tight seal between such units. A fastening device 7 secures a stout 5 to a unit 2 and is a pin 8 with a handle 9 (Fig. 1A) at one end and a tapered other end with a hole to receive e.g. a cotter, to hold it in holes in the assembled parts. A heel block 13 (Fig. 7), with which may be an associated reinforcing steel plate, is secured to a member 12 of a unit 2 and has a portion to engage in a cut-out in an adjacent joist member 3 to lock the unit 2 to the unit 1 at the eaves on assembly. In a modification (Fig. 13) the rafter members 39 of units 2 have grooves 40 for fitting noggings 41 having tongues to fit thereinto between such members, In an alternative modification the rafter unit has transverse tiling battens secured to the rafter members. With two rafter units 2 in line (Fig. 1) their free ends are joined together on assembly to define a roof ridge by means of a plate 22, fitted with tie-rods 27, 28 which can extend down and out to connect with brackets 29 attached to the strut pivots 6 on the units 1 and carrying a sag rod 30 attached to a bracket 31 secured to adjoining ends of the units 1. One can have a span roof with two sections of this form and within the units 1, 2 of each may be mounted beams to extend therebetween.
