A machine for forming boxes from blanks has means for delivering blanks from a stack on to support means having two parallel outer edges over which the corner laps of the blank are bent and means for feeding the blank along the edges after the corner laps have been bent. The blanks 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) are fed from adjustable guide rails 70 (Fig. 1, not shown) of a magazine 30 by a separating device 32 having a transfer arm 80 with intermittently operating suction cups 82 (Fig. 3, not shown) on to a pair of parallel rails 90 with the trailing edge of the blank positioned against a pair of curved rails 130. Four bending arms 132, 134 on shafts 136 descend to the position in Fig. 1 to bend the blank corner laps 14 over and outside the rails 90, after which the blank is moved along the rails 90 by reciprocating feed slides 160 to an adhesive station 36 where end wings 16 pass between rollers 60, 190 and that adhesive in trays 192 is applied at a thickness controlled by a doctor blade. The blank is then transferred by lugs 211 to a station 38 where end wings 16 are flexed and extensions 18 are folded over rails by means of folding members and guide surfaces 212, 213. The blank is then fed to a forming station 40 and placed on a forming plate 230 (Fig. 9, not shown) corresponding to the bottom portion 11 of the blank and secured to the upper end of a rod 232 which moves to raise and lower the plate 230 between four forming rails 260, 261 which have curved extensions at their lower ends to engage and fold down side wings 12 of the blank during the upward movement, while a pair of presser plates 290 move inwardly to press both ends 16 of the blank against the glued corner laps 14 to secure the box, the presser plates 290 being secured by ball nut units 320 to move along screw shafts 321, 322. Finally, a box form 320 similar in size to the interior of the box is advanced on the upper end of a shaft 236 to fold the bent extensions 18 upwardly over the corner laps 14. The machine is powered by a motor M with a variable speed drive, rotating cam-shaft 50 and chain-and-sprocket -arrangement 52, while there are various provisions for adjustment to take different size blanks.
