Abstract

1,060,172. Protective arrangements for battery charging systems. C.A.V. Ltd. Jan. 13, 1966 [Jan. 26, 1965], No. 3315/65. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A charging system for a battery 16, of the type comprising an alternator 10, a main rectifier output 11 and an auxiliary rectifier output 14 supplying a regulator 18 and the alternator field winding 19a, is provided with a relay having two operating coils 19, 20 and two pairs of normally-open contacts 17, 21 controlled by energization of the coil 19 from the output 14. A transistor 28 is biased from the battery 16 through a resistor chain 29, 30, the arrangement being such that if the battery is incorrectly connected transistor 28 is cut-off and the coil 19 cannot be energized to close contacts 17, 21. Should the battery become open-circuited when the system is operating normally, the voltage surge occurring at terminals 12, 13 breaks down a Zener diode 23 to make conductive a normally-open controlled rectifier 22 and so permit current flow through the coil 20 between terminals 13, 15, thus limiting the magnitude of the surge. This also reduces the supply to the field winding 19a and the alternator output falls until the energization of coils 19, 20 is insufficient to hold contacts 17, 21 closed. Opening of these contacts switches off the rectifier 22 and allows the alternator output to build up again and ,reclose contacts 17, 21.
