Abstract
1,054,370. Lubricants. CASTROL Ltd., J. S. ELLIOTT, E. D. EDWARDS and G. J. J. JAYNE. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 36965/63. Heading C5F. [Also in Division C3] A lubricating composition comprises a major portion of a lubricating oil and a minor portion of the reaction product of (1) a long chain monoalkenyl succinic anhydride of molecular weight 600 to 3000; and (2) the product formed by reacting at at least 180‹ C. a polyamine where n is an integer from 1 to 8 and R is H or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and #-butyrolactone or #-valerolactone. The long chain monoalkenyl succinic anhydride may be obtained by reacting a normally liquid oil-soluble polyolefine of molecular weight 600 to 3000 with maleic anhydride. The lubricating compositions may also contain copper deactivators, pour-point depressants, antioxidants. viscosity index improvers and other conventional additives. Preferred antioxidants are the zinc salts of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids derived from C 4 to C 10 alcohols. " Cold sludge dispersancy tests are carried out using a leaded petrol and a spindle oil as lubricant, the additives tested being the reaction product of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride with the product of reaction of #-butyrolactone with tetraethylene pentamine, diethylene triamine, pentaethylene hexamine or triethylene tetramine. " Panel Coker tests " are carried out using as a base oil a solvent refined mineral oil of viscosity 160 seconds Redwood I at 140‹ F., the additives being zinc hexyl/isopropyldithiophosphate used with the same reaction products as employed in the " cold sludge " dispersancy tests or using the reaction product of polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride with the product of reaction of #- valerolactone with tetraethylene pentamine. " Petter " (Registered Trade Mark) engine tests are carried out using similar additives.
