Abstract
1,053,664. Ventilating tunnels. BERGWERKSVERBAND G.m.b.H. April 23, 1964 [April 24, 1963], No. 16804/64. Heading F4V. Layers of dangerous gas in underground tunnels are removed by blowing air into them from a tangential opening or openings of an air duct. As shown in Fig. 1 air from radial openings 5 in a duct 3 is diverted by a jacket 6 to a tangential outlet slot 7, the emergent stream from which blows into the gas layers and causes a swirling motion to be imposed on the main ventilation air stream in the tunnel, which stream thus carries away the dangerous gases. The outlet slot may be of adjustable width, Fig. 3b (not shown). In another construction, Fig. 5b (not shown), projections 35 and 37 are provided for hanging the duct in the tunnel, the projection 35 having a row of outlet openings 36 for the tangential discharge of air. In a further construction, Fig. 4b (not shown), swirl vanes 22 may be provided on a central tube 26 to cause air to emerge tangentially through a slot 23. In the part of the duct downstream of the slot 23 further vanes are provided to correct for the swirl and give linear flow.
