Novel N-substituted natural fatty acid amides having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is the residue of a natural fatty acid of hempseed oil, linseed oil, perilla oil, oiticica oil, kaya oil, water melon oil, soyabean oil, sunflower oil, rice bran oil, pumpkin oil, kaolliang oil, sesame oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, cashew oil, tsubaki oil, ergot oil, peanut oil, lard, bone oil, horse fat, locust oil, crysalis oil, shark oil, cuttlefish oil, sardine oil, flatfish oil, horse mackerel oil, mackerel oil, saury pike oil, herring oil, cod oil, trout oil, grey mullet oil, tunney oil, menuke oil, menhaden oil, eel oil, or whale oils and R<SP>2</SP> is a substituted amino group of the formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, hydroxycycloalkyl, alkoxycycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, hydroxyaryl, alkoxyaryl, haloaryl, haloalkylaryl, alkoxy-haloaryl, haloalkyl-haloaryl, aralkyl, alkylaralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyaralkyl having a total of not more than 36 carbon atoms, R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an R<SP>3</SP> group, and R<SP>5</SP> is an alkylene group or an oxygen-containing alkylene or alkenylene group having a total of not more than 7 carbon atoms excepting those compounds wherein R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are alkyl, or R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl and R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen and R<SP>1</SP> is the residue of a fatty acid of linseed oil, poppyseed oil or soyabean oil, are obtained by reacting the said natural oil, natural fatty acid, or an ester of the natural fatty acid with an amine of the formula R<SP>2</SP>-H. Pharmaceutical compositions having cholesterol-lowering activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally.
