Abstract

An NH4NO2 solution is formed by the action of N2O3 on an aqueous (NH4)2CO3 solution by simultaneously mixing NO with excess O2 and introducing the mixed gases into the aqueous (NH4)2CO3. The preferred molar ratio O2/N is between 0.25 and 2. The NO may be obtained by the catalytic combustion of NH3 with O2, followed by removal of H2O and NO2, or by maintaining an arc in an atmospheric N2/O2 mixture.
