Abstract

1,041,421. Making tearing lines for opening cans &c. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1965 [March 3, 1964], No. 8993/64. Heading B3J. A method of scoring sheet-metal can-ends &c. 9, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), comprises locating the part 9 on an anvil 10 and locally bending the part in the region to be scored, so that the side facing the scoring tool 11 is in tension and the opposite side in compression, as the tool 11 penetrates and scoree the metal. The scoring die 11 is carried by a sleeve 27 slidable on a part 28 which is carried by a crank-driven head 29. The die is held in its locked position (Fig. 3, not shown) by the lower ends 43 of levers 40 on stationary pivots 41, the upper ends of the levers being held apart by toggle links 36 biased by a spring 38. An indexable wheel 17 supports the anvils in holders 21 biased downwardly by springs 23. Above the anvils is a stationary impact ring 18 against the lower surface of which the operative holder 21 may be brought to bear by levers 24, 53 and a link 26 operative by the head 29. After the holder has been raised, contact between the head and a sleeve 35 supporting the links 36 causes the links to free the adjacent ends of levers 40 for inward movement caused when the lower ends of the levers are forced apart by expansion of a spring 31 as this drives the die against the workpiece. Spring-pressed catches 45 engage notches 44 in the levers 40 to prevent their return until the head has been withdrawn. A flange 58 on the part 28 raises the die-sleeve 27, which re-compresses the spring 31. The spring 38 is also compressed against the toggle-sleeve 38, which moves into the toggle-set position only after abutments 50 suspended from the head 29 free the catches 45 from notches 44. The arms 40 now re-lock the raised die. Electromagnetic devices or pneumatic cylinders may be used instead of spring 31.
