Abstract

A differential for motor vehicles has electronic control of the locking to permit maximum adherence at starting and when driving in a straight line. The locking torque can be suppressed or decreased at the entry to a turn and then adjusted as a function of the turn radius. Proximity detectors (27, 28) in front of the disc brakes measure the speed relative to planetary wheels (1, 11) in a differential. This information is transmitted to a control box (31). An adjustment box (32) enables the percentage lacking to be adjusted. This is indicated by the control pointer and the information is sent to a control box (24) which drives an electrovalve (23) to regulate the pressure on a piston (7). This control box is also connected to potentiometers (25) on the steering rack (26). The piston thus acts on the clutch (6) in the differential to provide the required locking or slipping.
