Abstract

The bolted pipe joint may be utilised on pipelines carrying gas or liquid under pressure and has one or more deformable ring gaskets (3) which are wedged onto the pipe body to obtain securement and the seal. A bolted collar(s) (2) is pulled onto a spacer sleeve (4). The sleeve has tapered ends (6) which fit into a reciprocal collar formation (5) and form a trapezoidal cavity for the gasket. The convergence of the sleeve and the collar thus wedges the gasket onto the pipe (1). A joint between two similar lengths of pipe may have two collars connected by bolts (7) parallel to the pipe axis. The collars house the two opposite tapered ends of a spacer sleeve which bridges the gap between the pipes (1, 1'), and each incorporates a gasket. The sleeve taper is a clearance fit in the collar housings.
