Abstract

High intensity electrical impulses are passed through a coil (4) which is located inside a metal tube (1), the resultant flux causing the tube to expand and wedge onto a surrounding annular plate (2). Several coils may be mounted at longitudinal intervals on a shaft, the dia. being nominally less than the bore of the tube, and their locations corresponding to those of the plates. The process may be adapted to fix annular plates inside the tube, using a hollow shaft with the coils inside and in which the tube is inserted. The coils may be wired in series or in parallel, the circuits (5) being embedded in the shafts which may be of insulating plastic with shock resistant elastic properties.
