Abstract

The molten slag is accelerated to a desired speed and driven onto the non-wettable surface of a target, from which the slag granules bounce off in a desired direction. Pref. the slag is kept at a prescribed height (H) in a tundish or vessel, and then flows onto a rotating drum or disk at a specified distance (h) from the tundish outlet. When using a drum, the vertical slag stream is pref. displaced 10-20 degrees from the apex of a drum rotating on a horizontal axis. The slag stream may alternatively be directed into the bore of a cylinder from a tundish rotating inside the cylinder and filled to height (H'). The slag may be from blast-, flame-, or electric- furnaces or converters etc. Spherical granules with the strength of river sands can be obtd. by controlling parameters (H,h).
