Abstract

Documents, such as cheques and driving licences, are rendered fraud proof by making the surface permeable where the amounts of money or signatures are entered. This prevents application of a solvent to permit alteration of the dcument. Gear wheels (I) are munted on the ends of two arms. The wheels are able to rotate and have surfaces which are matched to the documents being treated. These wheels are pressed into the document surface to replace the smooth surface by a crinkled surface which is spongy and permeable. This is obtained by ligh fracturing of the fibres and does not affect the readability of the writing. When a solvent is used on the document is acts as a blotting paper to make the fraud obivous.
