Abstract

An apparatus for mixing a gas with a liquid, esp. a direct steam injection apparatus for modifying, esp. raising the temperature of a continuously flowing liquid, comprises a mixing duct of pref. circular cross-section with one or more openings for introducing the gas or steam. This duct for the liquid flow comprises a converging portion followed by a diverging portion; the opening or openings for injecting the gas or steam are so constructed that the velocity of the gas entering the liquid flow possesses a circumferential component about the axis of the mixing duct. Used in particular for mixing steam with liquids possessing relatively high viscosity. The kinetic energy resulting from the expansion of the entering steam is used to increase and cause frequent changes in the surfaces of the steam bubbles and produce through mixing with the liquid.
