Abstract

Cellular concrete is made by mixing cement, sand and expanded polystyrene balls, mixing the mass with water and casting. Specifically the cement is CPA 250/315, the sand is pumice sand of particle size 0.5-1 mm., and the polystyrene balls are 2-3mm. dia. The material is mixed wet for 2-4 mins. before casting and the mould is vibrated during pouring. The moulded elements are allowed to set for about 12 hrs. before demoulding then stored for several weeks to harden, the mouldings being regularly sprayed with water during storage. Concrete is used in mfr. of panels, beams, pillars or posts, etc. It is cheaper than prior art yet has a reasonable strength, is light in weight and has much better thermal and acoustic insulation properties than conventional concretes.
