Abstract
Process for mfg. hot rolled metla strips of different widths from slabs with a constant cross-section which are supplied from a casting plant, and using a single pass through a planetary rolling mill which requires feeding with thin slabs of varying widt. Before being fed into teh planetary mill, teh slabs are repeatedly hot worked by pressure tools to reduce the slab thickness while the slab width is increased, reduced, or remains unaltered; the pressure tools can follow the forward feed of the slab and have a slow working stroke and a brief idling stroke. The pref. press uses pairs of tools working on all four sides of the slab and described in the claims. The invention permits a planetary mill to be located near a continuous casting machine and one mould to be used for producing sheet of various size, because the press reduces the slab thickness to that tolerated by the mill; mould changes are thus avoided.
