Abstract
A structure (6) to obtain energy from the rise and fall of the waves has vertical legs (7) anchored to the sea bed (8) and supporting a platform (11) above wave level (28). A sub-structure (10a) on this forms a support (9a) for a vertically mounted rack (13). Below wave level, the rach has a spherical float (23) filled with plastics foam (26). As the swell of the waves moves the float up and down, the rack reciprocates and rotates a pinion (15). This, in turn, drives a motor through sets of pawl cluthes (17a, 17b). Each clutch transmits motion in a direction opposite to the other. A sphere (22) of denser material, mounted above the float, provides the inertia for the system.
