Abstract

Plant for producing composite metal slabs for rolling into clad sheet, e.g. mild steel clad with stainless steel, includes two pivot tables which swing two identical slabs into a vertical position so that the noble cladding is in contact. A mobile portal is fitted with clamps holding the vertical sandwich while it travels to a welding station fitted with devices which press the slabs together during the peripheral welding of the slabs. Each welding station is fitted with a turntable for moving the sandwich through 90 degrees so that it is aligned with the welding appts. After rolling into sheet, the peripheral weld is removed.
