Abstract
Extrusion oriented thermoplastic film is produced from a die having a choker bar set to give a very narrow clearance and the film is then rapidly applied to the surface of a chill roll, using a combination of an external pressure jet and a suction manifold for creating a vacuum at the film/roll interface. Used for mfr. of film about 10 mum thick with a tolerance of =plus-or-minus 3% in widths up to 3m. and outputs up to 150 m/mm. from polyethylene, polypropylene or polyamide resins for use as ink coated printing ribbons. Minimum delay in quenching the extrudate against the chill roll allows prodn. of thinner film than blown or wet-quenched film extrusion processes to enhance spool capacity, and to closer tolerances, for high uniformity of ink coating depth and print transfer. Also provides a high degree of longitudinal orientation for the assymetric tear strengths required for fabricating and using printing ink tapes.
