Abstract

The very high pressure pump has a casing (1) with a cylinder in which a plunger (2) reciprocates. The cylinder is divided into two sections (A, B) by a partition (3) which is concentric round the plunger (2) and can slide along it. The partition has seals (4) to the plunger and to the casing. Working fluid is drawn from a source (13) through a non return valve (12) into one section (B) of the cylinder and discharged by the plunger through a delivery non return valve (15). A sealing fluid is pumped (7) through the other section (B) of the cylinder through a labyrinth gland (8) round the shaft and back to its source. The movement of the partition (3) is limited by a shoulder (16) on the inside of the pumping section (B) of the cylinder.
